Monthly Postcard Club
Octobre 2026
Oaxaca Centro, Oaxaca, Mexico
Welcome to month two of our Oaxaca tour!
Though this watercolor depicts a scene in Mexico, the colors are all fall, so I have been saving this one. This bold painting kicks off our three-month tour of Oaxaca! This month's postcard brings us to Teotitlán del Valle, a Zapotec village in the valleys outside Oaxaca City, known for its weaving, natural dyes, and living traditions.
Your watercolor postcard print is of the home of Bulmaro Perez Mendoza Oaxacan Rugs, a family workshop known for hand-woven wool rugs.
Quinta Real
“Classic Oaxacan luxury meets traditional 16th-century architecture.” - Conde Nast
Long before it welcomed tourists, the Quinta Real was home to the nuns of Santa Catalina de Siena. The building’s story begins in 1559 as a refuge for women, many of them widows, and construction on a true convent started in 1577. By 1590, 38 nuns lived here. Over the next two centuries the convent grew to include a large church, quiet cloisters and rows of small cells, many of which are now guest rooms.
In 1862, Mexico’s Reform Laws took church property into government hands, and the nuns were forced out. In the century that followed, the building took on lives no one could have imagined: it became a prison, then Oaxaca’s municipal palace, a movie theater and even a Masonic lodge. It finally became a hotel in 1976. Each chapter left its mark, from thick stone walls and worn tile floors to the cracks and layers of paint that make the courtyard so irresistible to paint.
